Tahir Carl Karmali

Blending Art and Photography with Surreal Imagery

Nairobi-based Tahir Carl Karmali's artistic journey from painter to renowned photographer exemplifies a seamless transition between mediums, driven by an insatiable curiosity and a passion for exploration. Karmali's foray into photography was sparked by his travels, finding the medium to be a convenient companion that allowed him to capture the world's vastness without the bulk of traditional art supplies.

Karmali's career in photography began in an unexpected niche—food photography. Drawn to the meticulous nature of stage setup and the added perk of free food, he honed his skills in capturing the intricate details and vibrant essence of culinary art. This initial venture served as a foundation upon which he gradually expanded his repertoire, venturing beyond the confines of food photography to explore the broader landscape of commercial and travel photography.

“I began my career first as a food photographer, because of my interest in stage set up and I would also get free food. I slowly began to build my client portfolio beyond taking food photos. I have been shaping my commercial photography portfolio as a travel photographer.”

As an integral member of the Kuona Trust, an esteemed art organization in Kenya, Karmali's artistic vision is continually refined and influenced by the vibrant community of artists within the Trust. His engagement with Kuona Trust has propelled him towards more conceptual projects, where photography meets installation art, allowing him to delve into deeper, more abstract themes.

“As an artist at Kuona Trust, I am focusing on conceptual projects for photography and installation exhibitions. I use digital photography to create image composites out of found objects to make surreal imagery."

Karmali's work transcends traditional photography, employing digital techniques to craft composite images that blend reality with the surreal. By integrating found objects into his compositions, he invites viewers into a world of imaginative possibilities, where the boundaries between the real and the imagined blur. His approach to art and photography is not just about capturing moments but about constructing new realities, challenging perceptions, and inviting engagement with the unfamiliar.

Tahir Carl Karmali's contributions to the fields of art and photography reflect a dedication to innovation, creativity, and the endless pursuit of beauty in all its forms. Through his unique blend of photography and installation art, Karmali continues to push the boundaries of visual storytelling, offering fresh perspectives and captivating narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide.
